SD13 - The Soundcloud Challenge.

I've been wanting to do this little idea for a while now and i've finally got the chance to. Soundcloud (as you probably are already aware) is an amazing intuitive website where artists/producers can set up an account and showcase their talents to the world. Along with You Tube Soundcloud has the world wide web locked down. Nothing else can compete with its simplicity, clean aesthetic interface, timed comments on any section of a particular track your feelin', and download ease. In a world where we receive tweets on breaking news events before radio or TV, I have no doubt that tomorrows future classics will break and explode on Soundcloud & Twitter before Radio stations and TV alike even pick up on it.

With this Episode I wanted to show how I can make a very good, professional mix of superb music that would have cost me about £100 in record shops 10 years ago. The power of "he cloud" is phenomenal. Here are 12 bangers that any dj is able to download for free on Soundcloud and able to use in their dj sets in a club at peak hour. I have included two of my own, so apologies for any nepotism in advance, but what i did for most is follow #soundcloud tag on twitter (see image bellow) and selected tracks coming into the news feed. I will post the tracklisting and soundcloud link for each individual track below.

Somewhat of a contorversial remix this one. When i stumbled upon the acapella for it, i instantly went into the lab and started work. I'll be the first to hold my hands up and say this isn't my usual style of house. But with the success of my Radiohead - Creep Remix, i thought this one would go in a similar fashion. Perhaps i was a little presumptuous, but working on this one was great change! And exactly what i needed. Off the back of it, it has invigorated my usual soulful work (I'm currently working on a new Sade remix and also a Lovebirds track that are coming along very nicely). One thing i didnt take into consideration was diehard Grunge Rock fans... If you are a Rock fan, this is going to be completely alien,clinical and painful to your ears. One Rock diehard commented to me that the chords do not fit the song, which is completely incorrect - I have used the same chords as the original (there is a piano tutorial on You Tube that backs this up). Anyway, Its marmite your either going to like it or your not. Its electronic, it techy, its blipy, its a little bit dark... and its a free Download ;-)

Welcome to SD11 - Summer Bangers.

It can be a tad annoying that artists/producers save their best work to release in the peak of summer for the holiday season.. But hey, you can't complain too much when August comes around and the air is filled with sublime, sophisticated Soulful House. One track is going to be massive, so big in fact, i had to play it twice in this mix... Lovebirds have teamed up with Stee Downes to produce an absolute killer. The first time you hear it, it feels like you've known it forever! Soul Drenched 11 is also blessed with Nick Moss (aka Groove Assassin). Sean McCabe - who is absolutely killing it with so many great remixes at the moment. Fresh music from Deep City Soul with Guy Robin on remix duties.

Speaking of Guy, his new track "Only You" is in the mix and is sure to cause fire on the dance-floor. The mix then gets partyful with my man John Morales' new remix of DJ Meme's classic cover - Love Is You(check them strings!). We've also got the amazing mix of Black Water by my good friend Rob Hayes which guarantees to work any dance-floor. There is little remix from myself in there, then we crescendo in what i believe will be defined as the tune of summer 2011...

Can Dance Music Get Any Worse?

LMFAO - How Commercial European sounding dance music reared its ugly head again.

Eminem once famously rapped “nobody listens to Techno”.

I wish he was correct. Actually to a degree he was. Well, he was in a sense that nobody in mainstream America listened to Techno. Unfortunately that table has turned.

For those who don't know, Techno is the rebellious and somewhat rather more electronically-mechanised brother of House Music that originated from the same generation but in the motor city of Detroit, not the windy City of Chicago.

There are three core genres of dance music that are building blocks to today’s dancefloor (you could very easily argue that they all stem from disco and i would of course agree, but that would shoot me way off topic). They Are House, Garage & Techno. All very similar in construction and composition but as different sounding as Rock, Heavy Metal & Punk are to each other.

To describe the three very briefly might as well be somewhat of a biblical tale. Just like some religions can all trace its way back to Judaism. The same can be said with dance music. Different religions are like branches that slightly changed their path or prophet along the way.. These three pillars of dance music are no different really.

House

House is from Chicago. In its true essence, it is an electronically produced version of Disco. I don't necessarily mean that it sounds electronic. That would be a great injustice to House music. I mean it in a sense that when disco died, people tried to make their own disco but they didn't have a brass quartet, bass guitarist and a string symphony. So they would sample bits of disco on the very first ‘electronic’ samplers, loop them up and add other musical samples that fitted the same key and made it sound like a whole new composition. The best way to describe it was that it became ‘electronically’ produced.. But it still featured ‘organic’ instrumentation (and still to this day does) albeit perhaps in a second hand sense of those instruments being pre produced in the samples.

Garage

Garage is from New York – was the Soulful Sister of House, it was everything House was but it wasn't necessarily about the groove... It was about the Vocals, it was about songs, it was about lyrics it was about soul. There is no such thing as Garage music anymore. But it has never died!! Sounds contradictory doesn't it? It isn’t. It’s because Garage changed its name to ‘Soulful House’ A tag it reluctantly adopted in the mid to late 90’s because another genre of music from Britain decided to steal its name. Back in the mid 90’s Garage was a big hit in London, As its first wave of fans matured into family life the wave coming started to make a different style of Garage. They replaced the disco 4/4 beat pattern and replaced it with a 2/4 beat used in Hip Hop / Rnb. They sampled old RnB records pitched them up to Garage/House tempo and called this new offspring ‘UK Garage’, also known as UKG or in the latter years of its craze ‘2step’. Genuine Garage fans didn't want to be associated with this new kind of garage so they started to call their original garage sound – Soulful House, which it is still known as to this day.

Techno

Techno is from Detroit – This is the electronic sibling of House, this is the version which is the complete opposite to Garage, this is the version that would be the ‘punk’ rock out of the three. It is very industrialised, mechanicalised its machinery sound lends itself to more imaginary landscapes than it does to emotive vocals.

Getting back to the point.

These three American genres never really made an impact in the States. But they became rapid, successful imports to Europe. In the uk these small scenes made in American cities blew up with House become the more dominant of the three, not too long after what was described as the ‘2^nd summer of love’ commercialisation exploited these genres and made pop music from them that took the main characteristics of all three and fused them into something that went on to be coined ‘eurodance’ music. Artists like 2Unlimited, Vengaboys and Wigfield and just a couple of famous prime examples of where pop music exploited the sound. Some people profited heavily from adopting this awful amalgamated sound. It wasn’t long before big pop stars were also abandoning their original music and cashing in on this ‘euro’ sound. From Cher to Madonna, from Simply Red to Run DMC - All of them had massive hits in Europe by adopting this sound, but it never penetrated the U.S. market where they would release a more soul / rnb version of the same track. Luckily America wouldn't buy this tripe. How things have changed.

It’s taken 15 years for mainstream America to finally digest the mutated sounds of dance music they actually created. Only now they are consuming the sound they gave us, but with the awful modifications added to it that we in Europe have cultivated. To compound things even worse, we are now in a situation where America is re-selling this ‘Euro’ sound back to us in an Americanised format that is even worse than the Euro sound which was born out of the great music they invented!! If you can get your head around that... You can appreciate just how awful and repugnant this has become. It has absolutely no right to call itself ‘House’.

Welcome to another addition of Soul Drenched, SD10 is an even number, which means we slow things down, sit back with a glass or two of wine.

Previous Soul/Funk/Groove episodes have featured quite a lot of old, rarer tracks. In this episode i wanted to redress that with some more recent cuts... This episode starts off with a rare track though, by Rachel Claudio. this is a very talented artist indeed, who is an accomplished pianist along with such a wonderful soulful voice. Suffice to say, she too good for the mainstream, but when you hear this opening track it has the feel good factor that makes you think you've known it all your life.

After that we go into Sade's new track which is such an eloquent cover of a Led Zeppelin classic. From there i spoil you with Omar, classic Brownstone, then Jamie Woon's latest track, with a cheeky acapella thrown in to Introduce John Morales' remix of Marvin Gaye, which will make the hairs on the back of you neck stand up!

I then speed thing up a little for the second half of the mix with a less known track that you will think "where have i heard this before" ;-)

As ever, its best served with wine ;-)

Being A Dj.

What is it?

Something i feel needs explaining. In fact something i feel needs to be explained for a long time now. Can i give you the full answer? Probably not. Is it different for every DJ? Maybe to a degree, but there seems to be glamorious misconceptions than there are sensible reasons! Hopefully by the time you have read this (and prepared to put up with my diatribe) you will know where the misconceptions end and the true core personality traits exist. I have not bounced this question off anyone else before writing it. I haven't done extensive research or polls. I can only speak from myself (and hopefully on behalf of my fellow dj’s who share the same sentiments) and hope it reflects the view of the majority. It certainly wont reflect the view of every dj mainly due to the fact that there are dj’s out there with ulterior motives. They are the reason i write this. I’m not writing to say they are outright cheats, exploiters or giving the ‘dj’ a bad name. I merely hope to show that there are... well, at least two types of DJs in this business.

The Extrospectionist.

Extrospection:

The observation of things external to one's own mind, as opposed to introspection. Ordinary sense perception or reasoning concerning the things perceived.

This is one type of Disc Jockey. It is my type of Disc Jockey. It is also the natural kind of Disc Jockey. One who finds it his (or hers) natural path they follow (sometimes stumble) in life. This is the type of DJ i hope i have reflected in the time i Dj’d. The easiest part of being a ‘dj’ is playing records, anyone can do it. You don't need a masters degree! But the hardest part is learning how! I’m not talking about technical skill, you can have all the skill in the world and still be a poor dj. Take a look at Sport, there are Brazilian ‘keepy-up’ champions who’s skills would put David Beckham or Frank Lampard to shame, but for all that natural flare they have with the ball, they are not good enough to play professional football at the highest level. That is because they haven't got that vision to unlock the oppositions defence with a flick. they haven't got the foresight to see that in the next 3 seconds the left winger will be open with a clean shot on goal with a 40 yard pass. But technically with the ball they are supreme. Technical application isnt the essential element, so lets put that to bed and move on.

So if being a Dj doesn't rely on technical ability, what does it rely on? I’m a firm believer that it relies on personality. But what kind? A flamboyant extrovert, Larger than life? Vivacious? outgoing? Party Animal? Loud? Cool? jester? No! some of those qualities may help and pretty much all have them are cringeful stereotypes of being a dj. But not a single one of them are essential.

To be a dj takes other personality traits. And the way i discovered this was through something i read from another DJ. The moment I read it, it immediately struck the chord. With pin point accuracy it explained myself back to me. It is the reason why i dj’d. It is probably the reason why i didnt go to University. it is the reason i still to this day turn over in bed in the midst of the night to scribble down the title of a track that has suddenly popped into my head and answered a problem swirling around my cerebral cortex for years of how i can go from Gwen McCrae’s – ‘All This Love That I'm Givin’ to Reel People – ‘Butterflies’ without changing the root key of the records melody along the journey. It is the reason i still to this day have these little scribbles of paper in slots where credit cards belong in my wallet, placed under magnets on the fridge. Or instances where there was no scrap paper and they went on other peoples business cards I'm meant to call, or even sometimes those improvised scraps fashioned from them flappy cardboard lids on the cereal boxes, not to mention the bits of paper in that spare drawer with no name that everyone has in the kitchen? (if yours does have a name, please let me know!) Or what about the daubing's that have been shakily written with one hand whilst driving driving down the motorway at night (i don't recommend this!). and not to forget, there's the ones you think of in work, when you email yourself from your works email to your personal Hotmail, so you can remind yourself at a later date?!

Enough, Explain already!

If you can relate to this this kind of behaviour then you are probably a dj like me. A dj who’s has an inherent need to share! And why do you share? What do you personaly get from it? I’ve diatribed long enough (i did warn you!) and I certainly dont want to plagiarise what someone else has so brilliantly explained before me, so here is the the ‘eureka’ reason i got into djing...

I’m a DJ from Merseyside. I started out in 1975, but stopped for almost 20 years, between 1984 and the end of 2003, at which point I started again.

One night during the period I wasn’t deejaying, turning off my mind, relaxing, and floating downstream I had what might be termed a moment of clarity. Paradoxically, although I was no longer a DJ in the literal sense I suddenly became aware that I’d never actually stopped being a DJ, for even if I was in a room with just one person I couldn’t help but ask them ‘have you heard this?’, and not only ‘heard’, but ‘have you seen this / read this?’, for it goes beyond music. Already taken somewhat aback by this nugget of self-discovery, I realised, in true eureka style, that this all pre-dates my being a DJ and goes back as far as I can remember – I’ve always had an inherent need to share, it’s absolutely central to my nature.

And for me what Greg wrote is exactly what it is, this need to share and working out what is so great about sharing. It goes far beyond the ‘taste making’ of liking a track in the persuasive hope the dancefloor will too. Or "i liked reading this book and i hope you like it when you read it too”. It has much more deeper levels, its more like trying to work out which book is right for that person. Anyone can share anything, be it a book, a movie, a music album, a gift, a Christmas or birthday present. Even an easter egg, sharing is easy. We All share! But understanding people and emotions whilst sharing in a way that connects with them, this is the hardest!

It isnt something someone can teach you, its something you sense. Playing music to a room of people isn't about getting the summers biggest party hits and playing them one after the other, its about reading your dancefloor. In fact i take that back... its about reading further than your dancefloor! Its about noticing the girl in the corner who has spent 2 hours putting on her eyeliner and hoping it doesn't run because that one guy didnt notice her. Its about breaking that group of 4 guys cycle in needing 9 pints before they will finally admit that the bar is stable enough to support the strain of the club without them needing to prop it up to the piont where they find themselves on the outskirt perimeter of the dancefloor, tensely trying to get involved. Its about spotting that older middle aged couple somewhat isolated by the cigarette machine who are have been daring enough to venture away from their local in a bid to feel younger for just one night, but at the same time feeling too old to engage, and its about playing something for them that will connect them with everyone else.

And you cannot teach that, you just have to be that kind of person who looks outwardly to others. And as any good dj who ‘gets it’ will tell you, the best satisfaction out of it all isn't when that group of girls who have danced all night to anything you play, come over and say 'well done' and ask you for their handbag back that you stashed for them behind the decks... But rather, its just that knowing glance, sometimes a half smile, sometimes a wink or a nod. Just to let you know that they got you. They got why you played it, when you played it... They connected! And just like when you have bought a present for someone who always wanted that certain gift, but never told you... It was you worked it out!

So the next time you think of ‘dj’ don't associate it with cool, don't associate it with glamour, don't associate it with confidence, don't associate it with showmanship and don't associate it with being extrovert. If anything it is the opposite. The best dj’s don't always project the best image, they don't notice themselves as such things. They’ve always spent their time looking at everyone else and trying to craft a way to connect with them and bring them all together. A real dj is the one person who is always at the party, but isn't necessarily partying themselves.

Whilst i wont waste anymore of you time mentioning the other type of Dj. You can always spot the fakers... They tend to party harder than the crowd...

The most successful and biggest selling British female singer of all time! The great thing is most people don't even know it. A shy, reclusive person who hates fame, its trappings and definitely doesn't conform to mainstream music. How does a woman who has never thrown herself on every available TV show, never thrust her hourglass figure on the front of every magazine, never made commercials selling shampoo or perfume and never made a pop record, achieve such fame?

She is the shining epitome of everything that is sleek, smooth, classy, soulful, sultry and deep about British music. Its no wonder that the Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland's & Beyonce's of this world all look up to her as their idol and inspiration. Its also very ironic that all three of them have never made any music in Sade's class, neither in melody, depth, chord complexity or vocality. Yet forever the 'big' female pop starts all court her name as a major influence for them becoming artists in their own right. That is because Sade makes music on her terms.

She is signed to Sony the biggest music moguls (and devil) in the world of music, but unlike every other megastar on Sony's portfolio, Sade isn't told what to sing and when to sing and where to sing it! Sade takes 10 years to make 1 album and only tours when the album is released. She makes music in her own time, not rushed out to be massively and instantly appealable with those simply easy 3 chords synonymous with ritzy pop music. Her lyrics are heartfelt, they aren't generically cliched in a way that everyone can instantly affirm to. There is no mass advertising campaign on radio, tv and internet. Sade is Sade. She was cool aged 21 has she still is at 51. In a recent article written about her in the Times, a journalist recalled a album release billboard of her in New York City a few years back. Someone had graffitied over it "This bitch only sings when SHE wants to".

And that is what makes Sade unique. She is the biggest selling UK Female artist of all time and she has done it on the quiet, out of the limelight, with a private life and a family. she has made music that will leave a legacy to be found again and again by future generations, unlike the instantly catchy but destined to sound outdated music of people Like Beyonce & Kelly Rowland.

And tonight I get to see her live in Manchester, if she does another album in the a decades time she will be in her 60's... Will she still be around? will she still care? Will she ever tour again? maybe not!

I may be the number one hater of all things Xfactor. But it's fair to say You Tube have pulled a massive coup here. I'm not sure how the director of ITV feels about this, not too happy i should imagine! I guess a lot of people only watch the early 'comedic' Stages of the show, then sack it off once Cowell & co have narrowed it down to the bang tidy blondes and cute boyband singers of whom they intend to exploit. So now by the looks of it, the comedy value that people talk about in their lunch breaks or down the pub will be on You Tube and not neatly edited into prime time TV.

After-all, You Tube is home of the aspirational minded anyway. Start digging right now and you will find genuine bedroom talent, who can not only sing, but play keys and strings. If your serious about your music, you need never look any further than You Tube already. Maybe Cowell knows this too well.
